This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, audikey (no title) above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins, and they perform different functions however the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easy to find particularly if you're looking at the Bosch sensor, which is what we have. Alternately, GM's version this part is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle.
